But if they caught you, they would drag you down into the ocean and later, just your lungs and liver would wash up. If you caught this water horses, they would make the best horses you would ever hope to find. I first stumbled across it when I was a kid - this legend of horses that leapt out of the ocean each November and galloped up and down the shore. I’m not sure it’s well-known anywhere right now. Could you explain our readers a little about these wild creatures? The capalluisce legend isn't very popular, at least in Spain. I mined that peculiar sense of belonging for Gansey’s character in The Raven Boys, actually. It wasn’t that it was otherworldly, though - it was that I felt intensely at home. I had convinced myself as an adult that the UK couldn’t possibly be as magical as I had imagined as a child, but I still remember quite clearly how awed I was when I first arrived there. That dove-tailed very nicely with my exposure to Celtic myth and music - my family has Scottish roots, and my siblings and I fell in love with the music very early. Most of those, however, were written by British fantasy authors, so to my child-brain, the UK seemed like the only place that magic could possibly truly unfold.

When I was very young, all of the novels I loved to read were about magic, and my absolute favorite of all of those were the novels that took place in the real world. Where does this influence come from? (Do you have British ancestors or used to travel to the UK as a child?) Lament is a dark faerie fantasy that features authentic Celtic faerie lore, plus cover art and interior illustrations by acclaimed faerie artist Julia Jeffrey. Many of your novels ( Lament, The Scorpio Races and The Raven Boys) are influenced by the Celtic culture. Deirdre had been wishing her life weren't so dull, but getting trapped in the middle of a centuries-old faerie war isn't exactly what she had in mind. Caught in the crossfire with Deirdre is James, her wisecracking but loyal best friend. Namely, kill Deirdre before her music captures the attention of the Fae and threatens the Queen's sovereignty.

Sworn enemies, Luke and Aodhan each have a deadly assignment from the Faerie Queen. An equally hunky - and equally dangerous - dark faerie soldier named Aodhan is also stalking Deirdre. Trouble is, the enigmatic and gorgeous Luke turns out to be a gallowglass - a soulless faerie assassin. Deirdre finds herself infatuated with a mysterious boy who enters her ordinary suburban life, seemingly out of thin air. She's about to find out she's also a cloverhand - one who can see faeries. Sixteen-year-old Deirdre Monaghan is a painfully shy but prodigiously gifted musician.
